Scanning ingredient labels
From the app’s English Help & Guide · Reference release 1.0.12
Tap the scanner icon at the top of Foods to read an ingredient label with the camera. This isn’t barcode scanning — it reads the text on the packet directly, so it works on private labels, imported products, and even restaurant menus.
How it works
The camera captures the ingredient text. You review and correct any OCR mistakes. Tolerated then runs the ingredient list against every protocol you’re on and shows one card per protocol — red if it contains triggers, amber for “check the amount”, green if no triggers matched.
Stays on device
No network call is made. No servers, no accounts, no ingredient database lookups — everything runs locally. If you’ve enabled AI Enhancements, an on-device language model helps with vague terms like “natural flavourings”.
Personal exclusions
The scan also checks the label text against your Food exclusions and places any match above the protocol results.
What it doesn’t do
It doesn’t certify allergen safety — legal allergen certification comes from the manufacturer. It doesn’t assess portions — we know what’s in the product, not how much. It doesn’t read nutrition panels.
